National Unit: Theatre Stage Management Operations

The Theatre Stage Management Operations is a stand alone unit offered by the SQA at SCQF Level 6 (equivalent to a Higher). This Unit aims to provide you with detailed knowledge and understanding of stage management and during the Unit you will gain both theoretical knowledge and practical skills needed within Stage Management.

Course Outline

During the Unit, you will have classes with the cohort where we will explore the roles and responsibilities of the Stage Management team; the types of duties that would typically be undertaken by different members of the team, investigate the different types of paperwork, and develop our interpersonal skills. During these classes you will also understand what is required in order to operate a prompt corner and call a show.

You will also have the opportunity to take on the role of Stage Manager and Deputy Stage Manager in one of the productions here at Imagine That Performing Arts. This will involve attending weekly rehearsals and independent working, supported by your Tutor, in order to complete relevant paperwork to build up your portfolio and a prompt copy of the script. During the performances of your show placement, you will demonstrate your skills at operating a prompt desk and you will be responsible for calling the show.

During the Unit, you will also have regular check-ins with the Course Tutor to discuss progress within the Unit and to identify strengths and areas for development that you may have from working on your show placement.

Class Details

The course will be delivered by a number of workshops (Saturday afternoons) but the majority of your Unit will be spent attending weekly rehearsals for your show placement. Throughout the year, you will have 1:1 sessions with the Course Tutor to review your progress and help you to set development targets. You will also be responsible for attending production meetings on a regular basis in order to support the production team.

Flexibility will be required during production weeks to ensure that the candidate gets enough experience with working within a production team.

Assessment

Assessment is by short answer test (closed book), portfolio of paperwork from your show placement, and a practical assessment of you operating a prompt corner during a performance. This unit is graded as pass or fail.

Award

Upon successful completion, candidates will receive the National Unit: Theatre Stage Management Operations.
